With effect from 1st January 2018, all first-time applicants for a Deer Hunting Licence (DHL) in the Republic of Ireland will be required to be certified as competent in knowledge of deer, including aspects such as hunting regulations and the law, under the provisions of the Deer Alliance Hunter Competence Assessment Programme (HCAP) or equivalent, before being issued with a DHL.
This applies whether their application is based on State forestry or on private land.

For administrative reasons, the tender competition previously launched by Coillte in April had to be suspended. Issues have now been resolved and Coillte again invite tenders for licences to hunt deer and game on designated areas of their forest estate

NORTHERN IRELAND’S leading countryside organisations have urged the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) to rethink plans for a 100 per cent online firearms license process.
Countryside Alliance Ireland (CAI), The British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC), and the Gun Trade Guild Northern Ireland (GTG NI) had been working in partnership with the PSNI’s Firearms and Explosives Branch since late 2015 on the development of online applications forms.
