Justice Committee Seeks Clarification on Firearms Licensing Fees

On Thursday the 27th June 2013, The Northern Ireland Committee for Justice rejected the Department of Justice’s proposals to significantly increase firearms licensing fees in Northern Ireland. 

The Department of Justice is seeking significant increases in firearms licence fees and has stated that the increases sought reflect their decision to seek full cost recovery.  This would mean that an individual firearm certificate would rise from £50 to £121 and a firearms dealer’s certificate would rise from £150 to £528.

Joint Meeting of WDAI, IDS and An Garda Síochána

A joint meeting between the Wild Deer Association of Ireland and the Irish Deer Society recently took place at Garda HQ, Phoenix Park, Dublin.  The meeting was chaired by Chief Superintendent Fergus Healy (Crime, Policy and Administration) on behalf of the Garda Commissioner and attended by Sergeant Paul Greene, Firearm Policy Unit.  The Wild Deer Association of Ireland was represented by Dominic O'Hea and Larry Ryan.  The Irish Deer Society was represented by Liam McGarry and Jim Daly.

Five Shooting Enthusiasts Win Test Case on Gun Licences

Five shooting enthusiasts have secured High Court orders overturning a senior Garda’s refusal to grant them a licence to use certain firearms in the State.


The proceedings were regarded as important test cases for approximately 160 similar cases.

Irish Game body merges with CAI

A decision has been made by the Executive Committee of the Irish Game Protection Association (IGPA) to merge with Countryside Alliance Ireland (CAI). As the representative body for the driven shoots of Ireland, the Association was formed in 1890 by a group of keen sportsmen to help conserve and protect the habitats of game birds and wildfowl. It is still necessary in 2013 to uphold these same objectvies.

Obey the Law

Members reminded to comply with the Law on Lead Shot

Countryside Alliance Ireland has launched a campaign to remind its members the importance of comply with the law on the use of lead shot in Northern Ireland.
We would also like to remind our members when visiting  England that it has been illegal to use lead shot over all foreshore, specified Sites of Special Scientific Interest, and for the shooting of all wildfowl wherever they occur, since 1999; and in Wales since 2004. Scotland’s law is similar to Northern Ireland in that it is illegal to use lead shot over wetlands.

Judgement Ruled on Firearms Cases

EU Public Consultation on Firearms

The European Commission has launched a European-wide consultation entitled “A common approach to reducing the harm caused by criminal use of firearms in the EU”. The consultation involves completing an online questionnaire with multiple choice questions by 17th June.

Deer Hunting Licence Application and Returns

NPWS will now accept a scanned copy of the application form and return form by email, to, once fully completed with the supporting documentation and signed.  Alternatively you can print and return the completed documents to: Wildlife Licence Unit, National Parks and Wildlife Service, 7 Ely Place, Dublin 2.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) are currently seeking applications for deer hunting licences and returns for the 2012/2013 season.
