As a pro-active member of the PAW NI Fin sub-group CAI are encouraging the public to report any suspected fish poaching activities to the appropriate agency.
As many struggle at the moment with the cost of living crisis looking for ways to increase their income it can be all too easy for some to look at exploiting our natural resources in an effort to bridge the gap.
There are a number of illegal methods to catch fish such as:
The use of nets is generally prohibited in all waterways in Northern Ireland. They can only be legally used by commercial fishermen on Lough Neagh or Lough Erne or for survey work (with the appropriate permissions).
Long Lines are composed of a number of fine hooks that are tied to a line. They can only be used legally by commercial fishermen on Lough Neagh. Outside these areas, anyone using anything other than a rod and line or hand line will be fishing illegally
Only by enforcing fishing regulations and increasing awareness of the legislation surrounding the importance of protecting fish stocks for the future.
